The Holocaust in the Palestinian Perspective

THE Holocaust, as an extreme event in history that happened to a very special, and what could be described as a controversial group of people, aroused a wide range of reactions throughout much of the world. These cover the whole spectrum of human response to historical events from end to end, from complete denial and denunciation to total identification, affection and solidarity.

This description largely fits the Palestinian people’s stand on the Holocaust, but with some significant difference. It differs from the European stand, especially that prevailing in Germany where there is a great sense of guilt and responsibility for spawning a racist movement that, when it came to power, led the country to such extreme deeds. There is, too, the other extreme in Germany, which comprises total denial and rejection of any responsibility. It also differs both in kind and degree from the attitudes among other European countries and peoples, many of whom also feel guilt for having allowed the Holocaust to happen and for leaving the Jews to their horrible fate, though with less of a sense of accountability.1

The Palestinian situation also differs greatly from that of other countries and peoples who are far away from responsibility, and thus guilt, such as other Third World countries. It must be recognized that the Palestinians are in a special situation because, although they were not directly affected by the Holocaust, either as victims or perpetrators, their indirect connection is unique.
